I just noticed this, though it was posted a year ago, by Kirksville, Missouri, farmer Steve Salt. Most farmers markets allow farmers to resell produce grown by others, with restrictions, he says. Many markets have rules but don't enforce them or have no rules at all, he laments.
"At uncontrolled markets, some vendors are little more then mobile grocery stores buying and reselling produce and other items-unfortunately often fraudulently misrepresenting their wares as ‘home-grown.’"
If Salt had his druthers, reselling would be verbotten, as it is in a minority of markets around the country:
"I feel that buying-reselling really damages a 'farmers' market in the long run as customers become savvy and question why they should shop there rather than that the more convenient superstore. In any case, you must be honest about where you get your wares; don't advertise stuff you got at the auction house as 'home-grown' and Heaven forbid, never, ever repackage stuff you bought at the superstore."
