New Jersey lawmakers and regulators are struggling over what regulations should cover farmers who sell at farmers markets, according to a report in the Newark Star-Ledger. In one county, the Health Department stepped in and ordered farmers to halt sales of home-made pies, pickles and the like, and to cease selling any meat that wasn't processed in a federally inspected facility. Counties and municipalities are looking for ways to fill in the gaps in the law.
"Raritan is close to passing an ordinance that will define a farmers market as 'a goods establishment having persons selling produce they have grown; selling produce derivatives they have created; and baked goods originating from state inspected and licensed facilities'."
